These are made of 8 to 10 steel wires of about 4 to 6 mm in dia with a bent finish at the
free end, held together at the fixed end. It weighs about 1 to 1.5 kg. It is used to open/ close
the track by pulling the ballast inside or outside the rail foot, to fill the ballast or earth in pan mortar.
It is also a dressing tool, used in filling the indentations made by tamping tool during machine
packing, and in dressing of shoulder ballast and cess. This is handled by one trackman individually.
