GCC Provides for execution of works with materials of the best and most approved quality of their respective kinds, agreeable to the particulars contained in or implied by the specifications.
I would like to know the following:
i) Can one demand for material of a particular brand ? For example can one demand for MS pipe made by TATA only while executing pipe line works?
ii) Can the members share their experience on above issue? |

One cannot insist on a particular brand with public money and will fall under `Monopoly & restricted trade practices' (MRTP). This also becomes promoting a particular product
You can mention the specifications and insist for the specification |

It is better to mention the relevant IS code No of the material.Like in case of GI pipe to ensure quality material the relevant IS code i.e IS:1239(Part I) along with class code 'L','M' and 'H' and shell thickness of the pipe along with unit weight can be described in the specification. |

There have been items of work where we have been mentioning ..." TATA/Jindal or equivalent, etc..". This means nothing. Push it a little more. Attach a specification brochure/ literature. Spell out the specs as in the spl conds of contract. Attach a photograf if possible. Make it specific.
But problem comes when u have to ensure it. You have a whole lot of junta doing that. Every single guy has to be on the same wavelength.
It may be too asking on the executive who prepares the schedule, and the babu who assists him, and who has to be explained the
"NEW ITEM".
But do get a poll on this question.
Its safer to go wid equvalent concept than risking ur job in quest of professionalism. |

Regarding IS 1239 and whatever, The specs are way behind what industry is producing. Seamless pipes were there in the market and the code took cognisance of these pipes only a lot time later. To get the best in industry, take a tour of the sales offices, and see what all they have to offer. Not all water in our colonies flows thru TATA pipes, though we keep muttering it. Criteria of pipe in codes -- Per unit length weight -- is okay for a gross view. objectively, what properties shud a pipe have to be called good? --- It shudn't leak, it shudnt corrode, it shud ensure flow the way it was designed, shudnt allow bacterial/algal growth, shudnt harm our health ( carcinogenic), should be easily transported, shud be seamless if possible, shud take the loads during boring and fitting fixing, shud withstand water hammers and normal pressures, should allow connectivity, and all this shud be measureable / quantifiable, at any point of time. Technology used in manufacture can be a gross way to identify good pipes. After all, A TATA pipe inspires us more by brand than by specs. Pipe thicknesses , ccoatings are tricky data, and have to be measured with more precision. Dimensional tolerances and statistical testings in codes are meant to reduce our workload in identifying good material, true, but do keep a watch on what the trade market has to offer. |
